A discerning listener of Joy FM has called for the immediate resignation of President Akufo-Addo.
Benjamin who called into the Super Morning Show on Wednesday morning believed that the President has failed to clamp down on illegal mining.
According to him, "since Akufo-Addo put his presidency on the line, he should resign.”
Government has been fighting illegal mining for many years, but the efforts and investments have all proved futile.
In 2017, the Akufo-Addo government launched a joint police and soldier taskforce named Operation Vanguard to rid the country of illegal miners.
It was during the launch that the President made his famous quote, “I am prepared to put my presidency on the line on this matter.”
Despite the massive public support, the result of the operation was minuscule.
Fast forward to 2019, government established Operation Halt to end the illegal exploitation of another natural resource, timber, especially in the Brong-Ahafo and Western Region, and the unrestrained destruction of forest reserves because of illegal mining, farming and lumbering.
The operation was relaunched in 2022.
Although a section of Ghanaians has been sceptical about government’s commitment to the course re-arrest of galamsey poster girl, Aisha Huang, has confirmed a lot of people’s fears.
Aisha was arrested in 2018 and deported in 2019, however, the galamsey kingpin has managed to infiltrate the country again to carry on with her illegal mining activities.
These series of "failed" efforts by President Akufo-Addo is the reason Benjamin is calling him out on his words.
He wants the President to walk his talk and resign.
