A consultant paediatrician at the Tamale Teaching Hospital says the country's health sector has been unable to use data to analyse the coverage of vaccines.
Professor Alhassan Abdul-Mumin blames the sector's failure to determine the number of unvaccinated children and make interventions to prevent such a situation from happening.
"Our problem in this country is not even about the documentation…We fall short when it comes to using data and that is where we're not able to take full advantage of what has happened and make interventions to prevent them from happening," he explained.
Prof. Abdul-Mumin explained that although various health institutions have some mechanisms for documenting children who are due for vaccination and also determining children who could not be vaccinated as seen recently, the use of data would have made things easier and engender a much more robust approach to solving the current issues
According to him, had the country adhered to trends revealed through data about vaccination in the previous years, the current issue of vaccine shortage could have been prevented.
For about six months, Ghana's health has been hit by a childhood vaccine shortage.
Children eligible for a vaccination against deadly diseases like measles could not be served. As a result, the country recorded a number of child deaths.
Following agitations from the public concerning the issue, it has been reported that government has been able to secure some vaccines ready to be deployed to the health sector.
