The Winneba Municipal Fire Service Commander, DO II Kwesi Hugues has confirmed that the Gomoa Okyereko road on the Accra-Cape Coast highway has been reopened.
The road was blocked earlier in the morning, following an accident that occurred on the stretch.
This resulted in a huge traffic situation in the area.
But speaking on Joy FM’s Midday News, Mr Hugues said that his team has successfully cleared the traffic after 4 hours.
“We have been able to clear the road to move cars to a place of safety, so as I speak to you now traffic is flowing uninterruptedly.”
He also shared that the 40 passengers that were transported from the scene sustained severe injuries due to the gory nature of the accident.
Mr Hugues also stated that he and his regional commander will check up on the injured patients at the hospital.
The officer admitted that, that stretch of road was accident-prone. He therefore advised drivers to follow traffic regulations when they are on the road.
“If you’re driving tired, stop and rest. If you’re a passenger and you’re in the car and they are over-speeding with your life, you have to protest and tell the police if you get to a barrier,” he stressed.
16 persons have been reported dead while 40 have been injured following the accident.
According to an account given by a survivor, the driver of the tanker veered off from his lane and crashed with the Yutong bus.
The impact was severe on the passenger sides of both vehicles, resulting in "the tanker driver being mashed."
