A sports broadcast journalist, Daniel Koranteng, has asked the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to intensify its commitment to local football if it actually wants to transform the prospects of the sports.
According to him, the GFA’s propaganda to force Ghanaians to support local teams as a sign of patriotism is an unsustainable way of growing the fraternity.
He insisted that for Ghana football to be a success, the Association together with government must be prepared to invest and work hard to achieve it.
"We can’t run away from the fact that it’s quality. We’re in 2023, we need to understand that where we’ve reached, in today’s world, there is access to alternatives. On Saturday afternoons, you can’t guilt-trip me to go to a Ghana Premiere League Centre by telling me that I am a Ghanaian, when I can take my remote and change channels and it will be Manchester United playing.
“We’re playing at the same time and that is competition. So the level of quality must be at par and compete to the point where I’ll be conflicted on which one to watch, not you [GFA] telling me that you are Ghanaian and you don’t watch the Ghana Premiere League,” he said on JoyNews’ PM Express.
Citing Morocco, the Sports Journalist said the residents of the North African country support their local teams due to the quality of football.
Mr Koranteng noted that the authorities of Morocco were intentional in revamping their sports sector and are reaping the fruits of their labour.
In view of that, he noted that the support for Ghana football will continue to decline if the GFA and relevant stakeholders do not change their modus operandi.
“When you watch Morocco football, it is quality. They’ve invested in grassroots so it feeds up to the senior level even the players they export are of a certain standard. And football is now scientific, the coaching, the facilities at the grassroots level, you can’t run away from it, once you don’t have it, it will affect the quality at the top and what will happen is that your consumers will not appreciate it. “It is nobody’s fault that you have to go and beg for sponsorship, if it was good, people will run and beg you to sponsor the league, it is as simple as that,” he explained.
