Ghana’s tennis national team, the Golden Rackets, are now looking to gain promotion into the Davis Cup Africa Zone II.
This was after they regained promotion to Zone III following a clean sweep in the Zone IV promotion tournament in Kigali, Rwanda.
The four-day competition took place between Wednesday, July 26 and Saturday, July 29.
Speaking to Joy Sports on arrival at the Kotoka International Airport on Sunday, the team’s head coach, Frederick Egyir, said he would go into a meeting with the Ghana Tennis Federation after this success to brief them on his plans for upcoming competitions.
He revealed he intends to compete in other championships to ensure his team is ready to progress into the Davis Cup Africa Zone II and be ready for the 2023 African Games.
“We are going to sit down with our GTF board members and brief them on the plans I have because we need to let the players play in some tournaments so that we can have some medals [in the African Games].
“Apart from the African Games, we are in Zone III now, we need to go to Zone II so we don’t have to let the players sit down until it’s time before we start preparing.”
The Golden Rackets captain, Herman Abban, said the team’s coach, Frederick Egyir, deserves the most credit for the qualification.
“We should give a lot of credit to the coach [Frederick Egyir]. He’s been working hard, going to these tournaments with his players and he thought this was the better team to qualify. We’ve got to give credit to him.
“We played, but without him, we wouldn’t have this team.”
