If you are in the nation’s capital and couldn’t be part of this year’s Homowo celebrations, there’s still a chance to catch some of the festive vibe at a concert by the Lipstick Queens on Wednesday, August 30 at the +233 Jazz Bar and Grill in Accra.
The all-female band is known for their fascinating, all-round repertoire. Music lovers who have encountered their regular Wednesday gigs at +233 and appearances at other places can testify to their versatility. The upcoming concert would, however, be a special onslaught on Ga songs in commemoration of Homowo which is the annual traditional festival of the Ga people.

On the bill to help the Lipstick Queens charge up the atmosphere with the Homowo feel will be some of the current best exponents of Ga popular music: Adane Best and Adotey Tetor. They have many hits up their sleeves and their names are familiar in Ga-speaking circles and beyond.
Naa Amanua and Showboy, both former members of the famous Wulomei band, will also perform alongside United States-based singer Lady Talata, Epixode and Essie who came to prominence through TV3’s 2011 Talented Kids contest.
According to the band’s managers, percussionist Vida ‘Mannye 1’ Ofoli and keyboardist Sita Korley, the show will kick off at 7.00pm with prayers by a traditional priest (Wulomo) in the presence of some Ga chiefs and queenmothers. There’ll be a comedy sketch from a surprise act as well as comments from a well-known gender activist.

The theme for the event is: ‘Promoting Womanhood and Our Heritage Through Music’, and proceedings will kick off with a free breast-screening exercise organised by the band from 4.00pm to 5.00pm at +233.
Together since 2014, the Lipstick Queens comprise Ruby Nunoo and Abigail Tetteh (lead vocals), Abena Pomaa (guitar), Winifred Thompson and Ama Ekem (bass), Abigail Aniapam (drums), Vida Ofoli (percussion, flute) and Sita Korley (keyboards).
They are a confident bunch of women who want to add the Homowo bash to Accra’s annual must-attend entertainment programmes as a way of increasing their fan base.
Sponsors of the Lipstick Queens Homowo concert include Karmed Consult, Gamashie Blogger, Qavar, AfroTV Online, GH Dave, KDL, Apuutoo Media, Izzy and CS TV.
