Former President John Mahama has donated relief items to the people of Benkrom in the Kintampo North Municipality of the Bono East Region who were affected by the Akosombo Dam spillage.
The spillage which resulted in the rise of the White Volta destroyed about 300 houses with thousands of people displaced.
Schools, hospitals and other socio-economic activities have also been shut down, making life unbearable for the people, who are mostly farmers and fishermen.
The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for election 2024 presented the relief items at Benkrom during his two-day “Build Ghana Tour”, in the area.

Among the items donated were 50 mattresses, 300 bags of rice, 40 boxes of cooking oil, two bags of used footwear and five bags of used clothes.
The former president emphasised that it is unfortunate the community is facing such challenges in a period when the country is going through some economic difficulties.
He, therefore, assured that plans are underway to improve their living conditions.
Mr Mahama implored the Benkrom community and the people of Kintampo North to cast their vote for the NDC in next year’s general elections, as the party is ready to restore the country back to its previous state.

The Paramount Chief of the area, Nana Kwaku Dankwah III on behalf of his people, expressed gratitude for the gesture, emphasising that the donated items came at the appropriate time to bring some relief to the people.
He promised that the items would be shared accordingly to restore the lives of the affected people.
Nana Kwaku Dankwah III also called on the government for support to alleviate the suffering of the people as some have completely lost everything.
