The Chairman of the National Democratic Congress' Council of Elders of South Africa, Benjamin Kofi Quashie has berated President Akufo-Addo for labelling members of the NDC as troublemakers.
He described the President’s actions as very unfortunate and unfair.
Speaking to Joy News on Monday, November 27, the NDC Council of Elders chair averred that while the President has the right to criticise and chastise people for unbecoming behaviour, he should be fair in dishing out his criticisms.
According to him, the President has often turned a blind eye to members of his party exhibiting very untoward behaviour towards public servants and institutions, and has instead been very vocal when the same is exhibited by NDC members.
He said, when “Kennedy Agyapong openly ridiculed a judge when he used very unprintable words against him. The president was silent about it."
“Is it that there are different sets of rules for Ghanaians? That if you’re an NDC person the president sees you as a troublemaker?” he said.
Mr. Quashie says it is unfair, unacceptable and does not befit a President to be seen to be picking sides so blatantly.
Mr. Quashie had been commenting on the President's condemnation of NDC supporters who had gathered at the former President's office to conduct a clean-up exercise.
Some supporters were seen brandishing cutlasses in a video that was shared on social media.
According to Akufo-Addo, their brandishing of machetes was not a sign of things to happen in the 2024 election and that Ghanaians would be allowed to go about their duties without disturbances from any quarters.
“I want to state that under my watch, no person or group of persons, no matter their political coloration will be allowed to destabilise our country to destroy the peace all of us are enjoying. It will not happen!” he emphasized.
Mr. Quashie, reacting to the statement said leaders who want their countries to grow and progress must be even in their actions "and our leader, the president, must be exhibiting same tendencies."
He added that “If you pick and choose, people don’t take your issues seriously."
