The Korean Foundation for International Health (KOFIH) has commissioned two newly constructed Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compounds, one rehabilitated health centre, and staff accommodation units in the Oti Region.

The Foundation says it invested GH₵‎1,149,010 into the construction of a well-furnished health facility and a four-unit staff bungalow in Ngawoe in the Krachi Nchumuru District.

The Grubi Health Centre which experienced leaking roofs, bat infestation, and uninhabitable staff accommodation units, was renovated by KOFIH to enable it to render quality healthcare in the Krachi Nchumuru District.
 
As part of efforts to attain universal health coverage in the Krachi West District, KOFIH constructed and furnished a CHPS compound for the deprived Amewoyikope community.

A four-unit staff bungalow was also constructed to accommodate health workers stationed at the facility. The projects which also included the installation of solar power, and a water supply system cost GH₵‎ 1,473,179.

Speaking at separate commissioning ceremonies, the Country Director of KOFIH, Bomin Yang, reiterated the Foundation’s focus on improving maternal and child health in Ghana, through the implementation of various programs and policies.

“Our project areas include Maternal, Newborn and Child Healthcare, Health Insurance Policy Cooperation, between the insurance schemes of Ghana and Korea, Biomedical Engineering System Strengthening, short courses training for health officials in Korea, and other need-based support for the health sector”, he added.

The outgoing Deputy Health Minister, Mahama Asei Seini indicated that KOFIH within the last 11 years made a great impact in the health sector of Ghana, by improving infrastructure, providing logistics, building capacity, and extending health care to deprived communities.

He added that eight health infrastructures had been constructed by the Foundation in 2023 alone.

“KOFIH’s investment in the health sector over the last 11 years has grown from as little as US$340,000 per year to over US$1,500,000 per year. These investments have been impactful”, he said.

Mr. Seini extended a heartfelt appreciation to the Foundation on behalf of the people of Ghana and pledged his Ministry's continuous support to the projects and policies being implemented by KOFIH.

The Oti Regional Director of Health, Osei Kuffuor Afreh, said KOFIH played a significant role in enhancing healthcare in the region over the last 10 years of its operation.

He outlined the construction of children's ward at the Krachi West District Hospital, conference hall and skills lab at the Krachi Nchumuru Midwifery Training College, Tokpo CHPS in Krachi West District, Old Dentah Manso CHPS in Krachi Nchumuru, renovation of Ntewusae Health Centre in Krachi West, Borae and Banda health centres in Krachi Nchumuru, Poase Cement health centre in Kadjebi District, and extension of theatre project at Krachi West District hospital among others.

He announced that KOFIH had agreed to extend its programmes from four to seven districts in the Oti Region to accelerate development in the health sector and ensure a healthy citizenry.

Motorbikes were handed over to Ngawoe and Amewoyikope CHPS Compounds.
