Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast (UCC), Sir Sam Jonah, has urged Ghanaian journalists to actively defend the country's democracy by speaking out on critical issues impacting its governance system.
Addressing media practitioners at the launch of the 75th anniversary of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) in Accra on Wednesday, April 17, 2024, Sir Sam emphasised the vital role of journalists as advocates for objectivity, informed discourse, and unwavering guardians of freedom and truth.
"In this era, where the essence of our democracy and the fabric of our society are tested, let us recommit ourselves to the principles that Ephraim Amu so eloquently espoused," he stated.
Expressing concern over certain developments in the national discourse, Sir Sam urged journalists to address issues such as the perceived politicization of state agencies against opponents, the encroachment on press freedom, the erosion of trust in the justice system, and the lack of accountability in safeguarding public funds.
"This is the time for patriots to find their voices," he emphasised.
"This is the time to be fearless and courageous. We cannot and must not compromise on our defence of the national interest."
Highlighting the significance of press freedom in democratic governance, Sir Sam underscored that "the success of our attempt at a democratic order will depend crucially on how free the press is."
The 75th-anniversary celebration of GJA, themed "75 years of excellence in journalism: Past, present, and the future," serves as a platform to reflect on journalism's journey and its future trajectory in Ghana.
