Member of Parliament (MP) for Offinso North, Augustine Collins Ntim, says the NPP's 2024 flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, does not appeal to the Christian community.
According to him, Christians will not vote for Dr Bawumia because he is a Muslim.
Mr. Ntim, a former Deputy Minister of Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development in the Akufo-Addo government, and a former Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Offinso under the erstwhile Kufuor administration, made the statement while addressing some constituency secretaries of the NPP in the Ashanti Region at Asokwa on Sunday, May 26.
Mr. Ntim stressed that the party's flagbearer must therefore choose a staunch Christian as his running mate to attract votes from the Christian community.
In view of this, he suggested that Irene Naa Torshie Addo, the administrator of the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF) is the best fit for the running mate position.
But this assertion by Mr. Ntim has been widely condemned by party executives and supporters in the Ashanti Region.
They argue that the suggestion by Mr. Ntim that Dr Bawumia is not popular within the Christian community is false.
“It shows how desperate Naa Torshie is when it comes to this running mate issue. Naa Torshie’s bid is the most bizarre. She is too desperate and being reckless with her spending. It will all come back to hurt us very soon,” a party official in the Ashanti Region remarked.
Subsequently, President Akufo-Addo has been asked to call the DACF administrator and other lobbyists to order.
