NPP General Secretary Justice Frimpong-Kodua has said he will not be surprised if former President John Mahama's polling numbers drop further in the coming months.
According to Frimpong-Kodua, Mahama's support has already declined since Dr Bawumia gained momentum in the campaign.
Despite this, Mahama still leads according to data from Global Info Analytics. However, Frimpong-Kodua emphasised that the most definitive poll will be held on December 7.
Speaking on The Pulse on Joy News, he remarked even though Mahama has dropped in numbers and still leading, “I’m happy that Global Info Analytics see that there are changes in terms of what they brought earlier on in April," he said
Mr Frimpong-Kodua highlighted that the NDC elected Mahama in May 2023, giving him several months of unopposed campaigning. “During this time, Mahama travelled across the country, presenting his plans without opposition. Meanwhile, the NPP was focused on our presidential primaries,” he explained.
He continued, “Once we selected Dr Bawumia as our flagbearer, he began sharing his vision and accomplishments as vice president. It's not surprising that Mahama's support is waning according to recent surveys.”
He continued, “We were more focused on our presidential primaries, but the moment that we had a flagbearer in the shape of Dr Bawumia, he also started telling Ghanaians what he is bringing on board, and what he has achieved as vice president. I’m not surprised that President Mahama, according to the survey his percentage is coming down.
Noting the rapid passage of time, Frimpong-Kodua pointed out that Mahama has lost 3.2% in support from April to July. “So in politics, is he peaking or he is coming down, and this is whereby it becomes very interesting because we have a candidate who has just started his campaign, he has been able to go round, just touched base in various regional capitals. He is even yet to do the constituency tour, and even yet to name a running mate, who will also start going around.
He concluded, “By the time the next poll is conducted, possibly in September, I wouldn't be surprised if Global Info Analytics places His Excellency Bawumia ahead.”
