The Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) has called on the Ministry of Finance to waive taxes exceeding GHC 100,000 to facilitate the clearance of equipment for Team Ghana to participate in next month's Olympic Games in Paris.
The equipment, valued at approximately €20,000, has arrived in Ghana and is currently held at the airport, pending clearance by the GOC due to the applicable duties.
JoySports understands that the Ministry of Youth and Sports advised the GOC, led by Ben Nunoo Mensah, to formally request tax exemptions, given that the equipment will be used by athletes representing Ghana at the global multisport event.
The Committee was optimistic about receiving the equipment by Tuesday, July 2, 2024.
However, it appears the necessary processes for its release have yet to be completed, as JoySports checks early Thursday revealed that theyhave not been cleared from the airport yet.
Team Ghana is scheduled to arrive in France on July 7, 2024, to begin preparations for the Games.
The country will be represented by nine athletes: seven in track and field events and two swimmers.
