The leader of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama has urged Ghanaians to join forces against LGBTQI+.
According to him, religious groups in Ghana frown on the act, saying it is an abomination.
“Traditionalists are against it, our Muslim brothers and sisters are also against it, we the Christians also are against it, hence, it is an abomination”.
He was speaking during a fellowship with the clergy in Kumasi on Monday, November 11, as part of his campaign tour of the Ashanti region.
He therefore urged all Ghanaians to avoid the act so as not to change the sexual orientation of the "next generation."
Ghana’s Parliament recently resubmitted the country's controversial anti-LGBTQ bill, "Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values", to President Akufo-Addo for his signature.
There is an existing order to wait until the Supreme Court rules on the bill’s constitutionality.
President Akufo Addo had previously declined to receive the bill, which proposes up to three years of imprisonment for individuals who identify as LGBTQ, insisting that a legal review be conducted first.
The bill also increases penalties, imposing a prison sentence of up to five years for the wilful promotion, sponsorship, or support of LGBTQ+ activities.
The president’s endorsement would be the final step required for the bill to become law in the country.
