President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has reaffirmed his dedication to ensuring that Ghana’s democratic principles are upheld in the December 7 General Election.

“The right to free and fair elections is non-negotiable,” he stated. “I am committed to ensuring that the will of the people prevails in every election.

“No ambition of any politician or political party will ever compromise the peace and stability that we, as a nation, have worked so hard to build and enjoy.”

He gave the assurance on Friday at the 2024 Graduation Parade of the Ghana Military Academy (GMA) in Accra.

The event marks the passing out of 73 cadets from the Army, Navy and Air Force who have gone through a six-month rigorous and transformative Short Service Commission and Special Duties Course 61 designed to forge them into disciplined and skilled officers capable of defending Ghana’s Sovereignty.

President Akufo-Addo described Ghana’s peace as “a sacred trust,” pledging to facilitate a smooth transition from office in strict adherence to the nation’s democratic processes to safeguard the country’s future.

With only two weeks until Ghana heads to the polls, he expressed confidence in the nation’s ability to showcase its democratic maturity.

He urged security forces to discharge their duties with professionalism and neutrality, ensuring the safety and security of all citizens.

“Our democracy will remain steadfast and unshaken,” he assured.

President Akufo-Addo celebrated the accomplishments of the graduating cadets and commended the GMA for its role in producing disciplined, competent, and patriotic officers.

He praised the Ghana Armed Forces for their dedication to national security, acknowledged their constitutional mandate to protect Ghana’s sovereignty and underscored the importance of leadership, discipline and integrity in their duties.

The President highlighted the Academy’s resilience in producing officers capable of tackling contemporary security challenges and commended the Acting Commandant and instructors for their commitment to excellence.

“To our graduating cadets, your training has instilled in you the values of loyalty, honour, empathy, and integrity. These qualities will guide you in serving our beloved Ghana,” he stated.

He detailed the Government’s investments in strengthening the Armed Forces, which include the establishment of Forward Operating Bases across the country to safeguard national security, and the procurement of modern equipment, including armoured personnel carriers, and patrol boats.

Others are reconnaissance helicopters, unmanned aerial systems and expansion of military housing and infrastructure projects.

President Akufo-Addo also mentioned the establishment of the National Defence University, the expansion of the 37 Military Hospital and the soon-to-be-inaugurated 500-bed Military Hospital in the Ashanti Region.

He highlighted Ghana’s significant contributions to international peacekeeping missions, noting the country’s position as the sixth-largest contributor to U.N. peace operations.

“We honour the memory of those who made the ultimate sacrifice for peace. Their courage and dedication remind us of our profound responsibility as a nation committed to the ideals of peace and security,” he said.

President Akufo-Addo urged the newly commissioned officers to uphold the values of the Armed Forces and contribute to the nation’s peace and stability.

“You are now custodians of a noble tradition. Serve with integrity, lead with vision, and inspire with courage. Let your service reflect the highest ideals of our Armed Forces,” he advised.

Brigadier General C. Agyemang-Prempeh, the Acting Commandant of the GMA, congratulated the graduating cadets and praised their dedication and resilience throughout the training.

He highlighted the comprehensive nature of the programme, which covered physical training, patriotism, leadership, and military knowledge while placing a strong emphasis on the development of character.

“As leaders what should preoccupy you always are values which entail; principles, standards, or qualities considered essential for successful leaders,” he advised.

“You are reminded that the profession of arms is a noble calling that demands unwavering dedication, sacrifice, and a strong moral compass.

“As Commissioned Officers, you must cultivate a high sense of duty, honour, and integrity. Above all, strive to perfect your communication skills and let the welfare of the soldiers you command come first and always.”

Brigadier General Agyemang-Prempeh emphasised continuous learning and adaptability, urging the newly commissioned officers to stay abreast of advancements in military technology and tactics.

He cautioned against the dangers of online gambling and recruitment fraud, which could jeopardise their careers and personal lives.

The ceremony ended with the presentation of awards and the conferment of Presidential Commissions on the graduating cadets, marking the beginning of their careers in service to the nation.
