Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has emphasised Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s pivotal role in revitalising Ghana’s economy during his tenure as President.
His remarks came in response to criticisms he faced after endorsing Dr Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer for the upcoming 2024 general elections.
Critics, including Alan Kyerematen, a former Trade Minister and now leader of the Movement for Change, questioned Kufuor's decision to back Bawumia.
Mr Kyerematen contended that the endorsement tarnished Kufuor’s political legacy, suggesting that the former President’s association with Bawumia was not deeply rooted in long-term knowledge of his capabilities.
Speaking at a mini rally in Abuakwa South on Wednesday, 27th November, Mr Kufuor dismissed the criticisms, affirming his confidence in Bawumia's leadership.
He credited the Vice President with playing a significant role in stabilising Ghana’s economy during his presidency, particularly through sound financial management and innovative policy contributions.
Mr Kufuor defended his endorsement as being based on firsthand experience of Bawumia’s expertise and dedication, urging Ghanaians to rally behind the NPP’s flagbearer.
He stressed the importance of continuity in leadership, suggesting that Bawumia’s vision aligns with the party’s goals for sustained economic growth and national development.
“During my administration, he was a member of the Bank of Ghana team and demonstrated remarkable performance during a challenging period when Ghana was in financial distress. Their efforts were instrumental in revitalizing the economy at that time,” Mr Kufuor said.
