Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has pledged to sign the anti-LGBTQ+ bill into law if he becomes Ghana’s president after the 2024 general elections.
This assurance was made during a worship service at the Philadelphia Church in Kumasi, where he addressed congregants on his plans for addressing key legislative matters.
The bill, which aims to criminalise LGBTQ+ activities, is currently in limbo, awaiting President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s approval.
However, the president has deferred his decision, citing ongoing legal challenges concerning the bill's constitutionality. The Supreme Court is expected to deliver its verdict on these legal disputes on December 18.
Dr Bawumia emphasised his commitment to endorsing the bill once the judicial process is completed. "When I come to power, I will sign this bill without hesitation," he assured the congregation, framing the legislation as a critical matter of national interest.
He further underscored the importance of addressing pending legislative issues, including the Anti-witchcraft Bill, which seeks to outlaw accusations and practices that often result in violence against vulnerable individuals.
According to him, resolving such matters will contribute to ensuring justice and harmony in society.
Dr Bawumia also highlighted his vision for completing unfinished policies initiated under the current administration.
"There are many policies or works that are not completed yet. And I know that when I come into power, I will do these works to make sure that everyone is happy," he stated.
