The Vice President of the Republic, who served as the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2024 elections, says he will support the former President, John Dramani Mahama, to whom he has conceded, in the handover process.
He declared the support while conceding defeat on Sunday morning, hours after the polls. He also said he had already called Mahama to congratulate him.
“I assure His Excellency John Dramani Mahama of my full support in the transition process,” he said.
He added that the defeated NPP members are democrats, and they “pledged to ensure that we have a very smooth transition so that the business of government will continue.”
He also stated that, despite losing the election, they would not remain passive in their quest to “transform Ghana and expand opportunities to all sections of our society.”
The Vice President further noted, “We will not be a destructive opposition,” while making a passionate call for NPP parliamentarians to “do a thorough job to advance democracy and ensure that the citizenry get the best.”
Mr Bawumia made these remarks at his private residence in Accra, where he conceded defeat.
Provisional results from across the country show that the former president has secured victory in many constituencies, giving him over 51%, while Dr Bawumia received just over 47%.
In the parliamentary results, NDC candidates are also deemed to have won majority of seats out of the 276 constituencies.
