The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) was only able to achieve 11.33% of its target of 500,000 votes in the Volta Region in the just-ended general elections.
Votes for the party’s Presidential Candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia plummeted as he recorded 56,699 votes indicating a decline of about 45% in votes President Akufo-Addo won in the 2020 general elections.
The Party’s regional executives set a target of 300,000 in the early days of the electioneering. However, the Director of Communications of the NPP, Richard Ahiagba, announced an increase to 500,000 at a press conference in Ho, hoping development initiatives in the region and across the country would convince electorates to vote for his party.

National and Regional Executives were optimistic about increasing the 100,481 votes President Akufo-Addo had in 2020, stemming from the enthusiasm exhibited around party activities in the region by residents.
Some people attributed the unachieved feat to a lack of interest in participating in Saturday's polls leading to a 64% voter turnout, and a clamor for a change of party in power.
Another objective of winning at least 3 more parliamentary seats failed, as the only parliamentary seat won in 2020, was wrestled from John Peter Amewu in Hohoe.
Its presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia recorded the highest votes in the Ho Central Constituency polling 4,153, while Adaklu Constituency gave him the lowest result of 1,375 votes.
NPP was toppled by the opposition led by John Dramani Mahama in the polls.
The opposition National Democratic Congress also dropped marginally from 606,508 votes in 2020 to 583,234 votes in 2024. However, its leader, John Mahama won the presidential race, with party clinching majority in parliament.
