President-elect, John Dramani Mahama has commended his main opponent, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, for conceding defeat in the just-ended general elections, describing it as a gesture that helped to ease tensions nationwide.
Speaking during his victory speech at his campaign office on December 9, 2024, shortly after the Electoral Commission declared him the winner of the elections, Mr Mahama acknowledged the significance of Bawumia’s concession in fostering peace during a crucial moment for the country.
The former president, who returns to lead Ghana after securing 56.55% of the vote, stressed the importance of unity and collaboration in the days ahead.
Dr. Bawumia, who garnered 41.61% of the vote, had earlier conceded defeat on Sunday morning calling for national unity and congratulating Mahama on his victory.
His move was widely praised by political analysts and citizens as a demonstration of political maturity and a commitment to Ghana’s democratic values.
The Electoral Commission Chairperson, Jean Mensa, declared Mr Mahama the winner, with a total of 6,328,397 votes. Dr. Bawumia received 4,657,304 votes.
