The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, has brushed off comments made by outgoing Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin.

The Effutu legislator had suggested that the incoming NDC government would struggle to raise revenue while fulfilling campaign promises to abolish so-called nuisance taxes including the controversial E-Levy.

Speaking on JoyNews' Upfront on December 18, Mr Kwetey dismissed the assertions, attributing them to the shock of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) election defeat.

"I don't know why... but you should understand. I mean, when you go through such a massive defeat, it's not easy. So I can understand, my young brother is going through quite a bit. You know, Afenyo actually said it was going to be a curse for him to sit at the place of the minority, now he's become what you call the leader of not a minority, but of a micro, micro minority."

During the campaign, the NPP’s presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia promised to scrap the contentious E-Levy, a tax introduced by his government.

Mr Kwetey questioned why Mr Afenyo-Markin doubted the NDC’s ability to deliver on similar promises.

“They said they were going to remove the E-Levy during their campaign. If they could promise that, it means it’s feasible. The E-Levy was touted as the solution to all of Ghana’s economic problems, but what did we see? The economy went through unprecedented humiliation even with the E-Levy in place. That tells you it was never the solution in the first place,” Mr Kwetey argued.

The NDC, he explained, intends to find creative ways to generate revenue and unleash economic potential without resorting to regressive taxes like the E-Levy.
