The Peasant Farmers Association of Ghana (PFAG) has called on President John Dramani Mahama to prioritise the appointment of a capable and experienced individual to lead the Ministry of Agriculture.
In a statement, PFAG commended President Mahama’s leadership and expressed optimism about his ability to transform Ghana’s agricultural sector.
The association cited his firsthand experience as a farmer and his deep understanding of the challenges confronting the sector as key assets for driving meaningful change.
PFAG stressed the importance of nominating an agricultural minister with the expertise, energy, and approachability to engage effectively with farmers and other stakeholders.
They noted that the poor performance of the agricultural sector in recent years has underscored the need for bold and informed leadership.
"We humbly request that you nominate a Minister for the agricultural sector who possesses a strong agricultural background, has the experience, is affable, youthful, and has the ability to connect with stakeholders across the value chain," the association stated.
“Farmers are looking forward to working with a Minister who is effective, approachable, and understands their concerns and challenges."
The association expressed optimism that the President’s agenda for "agro-economic transformation through a 24-hour economy" would address systemic challenges and revitalize the agricultural sector. PFAG pledged its support and collaboration to ensure the sector thrives under his leadership.
“We are hopeful that under your leadership, the full potential of smallholder farmers and the agricultural sector will be realized,” the statement added.
