The Local Government Minister nominee, Ahmed Ibrahim, has pledged to ensure the prompt release of the District Assembly Common Fund to Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs).
Speaking during his vetting, Mr Ibrahim underscored the critical role of timely fund disbursement in maintaining public confidence and securing electoral success.
He noted that governments that delay or fail to release these funds inevitably face dire political consequences. Citing historical examples, he pointed to the consequences both the National Democratic Congress and New Patriotic Party faced over their inability to improve disbursement.
“In 2014, the NDC couldn’t pay the third quarter. I was a Deputy Majority Whip, and we spoke about it. We lost the 2016 elections. Similarly, the outgone government delayed in paying the third and fourth quarters, and they also paid the price after losing. Whether you win or lose, you pay it," he said.

The nominee also vowed to maintain his outspoken stance on local governance issues, promising to continue advocating for timely fund releases as he did during his tenure as a Deputy Whip and member of the Local Governance Committee.
“I will not keep my mouth shut because I am the Minister responsible for local governance. I will ensure the timely release of funds to enable DCEs to work effectively,” he assured.
He expressed confidence in the collaboration between himself and the Finance Minister nominee. According to him, the Finance Minister nominee, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson is an experienced and focused individual who understands the importance of funding DCEs to ensure the government's success.
“We both understand the repercussions of delayed payments. If you want the electorate to be happy and retain the government, you must prioritize releasing the funds,” he added.
Mr Ibrahim stressed the importance of empowering DCEs to work effectively, as their performance directly impacts the electorate’s satisfaction.
