Ghana’s Minister-designate for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has emphasised the need for a comprehensive review of the National Sports Authority’s (NSA) operations, particularly in managing sporting disciplines.
Speaking on Sporty FM, Adams stressed that while the development of new sports is inevitable, there must be a structured approach to their classification and management.
“A serious review is needed in the way the NSA has been run. You cannot have everything you need at the same time. As for new sports, I will not be surprised if more are registered. That is why reclassification is necessary. We need to conduct a proper reclassification,” he stated.
Over the years, the NSA has faced challenges in balancing resources among various sporting disciplines, with some receiving little to no support. The introduction of new sports further stretches the already limited resources, making it crucial to reassess how disciplines are categorised and supported.
Adams’ remarks suggest that his tenure will prioritise restructuring the country’s sports management framework to ensure a fair and efficient allocation of resources. His nomination is still subject to approval by the Appointments Committee before he can officially assume office.
