President John Mahama has underscored the transformative power of technology in Africa’s economic growth, urging governments to embrace digital infrastructure as a catalyst for industrialization and job creation.
Speaking at the 2025 Africa Prosperity Dialogues in Accra on February 2, Mr Mahama explained that the continent has a golden opportunity for Africa to leapfrog traditional development models and accelerate economic inclusion.
According to him, Africa must go beyond merely exporting raw materials and instead leverage technology to process and add value to its natural resources. He highlighted how digital transformation could drive financial inclusion, improve public service delivery, and create new economic opportunities.
"We don't need to go back to inventing the wheel. Digital transformation can drive financial inclusion, improve public service delivery, and create new opportunities for all our people," he stated.
He stressed that expanding internet access and digital infrastructure is crucial to bridging the digital divide and fostering innovation. With increasing global reliance on technology, he noted that Africa must integrate FinTech and e-commerce solutions to facilitate trade and enhance economic participation.
President Mahama also called for greater collaboration between governments and the private sector to push industrialization through special economic zones that promote manufacturing and technological innovation.
He reiterated the need for investment in technical and vocational education to equip young Africans with the skills required for future industries.
With capital and technology now more accessible than ever, he urged African leaders to take proactive steps in ensuring local participation in resource exploitation and economic decision-making.
