The Executive Director of Parliamentary Network Africa, Sammy Obeng, has pledged to ensure that Parliament holds every Member of Parliament (MP) involved in the recent chaos fully accountable for their actions.
He stressed that these MPs must be held to the highest standards, per the rules, codes, and ethics expected of them.
Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show, Mr Obeng made it clear that his organisation would not allow the issue to be forgotten. "We want to assure the Members of Parliament that we will not forget this.
He expressed the hope that no MP involved in the scandal will go unpunished, to deter others from engaging in similar behaviour.
We will remain vigilant and relentless, whether it’s on the tenth day, the eleventh day, or even if it takes 300 days, we will continue to remind Parliament to take all necessary steps to ensure that every MP involved in this misconduct is held accountable for their actions," he said.
He pointed out that similar incidents had occurred in the past, often going unaddressed, which has emboldened newer MPs to act inappropriately.
Mr Obeng warned that if the issue is not dealt with decisively, it could become institutionalised, permanently damaging the reputation of Ghana’s Parliament.
"If we do not address this once and for all," he cautioned, "it will become an accepted part of the system. We cannot allow Parliament’s reputation to be tarnished, none of us want that for Parliament."
With his unwavering commitment, Mr Obeng made it clear that his organisation will continue to push for accountability, no matter how long it takes.
The fight to preserve the integrity of Ghana’s Parliament is one they are determined to win.
