Ghanaian highlife crooner Kwabena Kwabena has reignited the conversation on whether there are record labels in Ghana.
The ‘Adult Music’ hit maker in an interview with Kwame Dadzie on Joy FM’s Showbiz A-Z expressed doubt in the assertion the Ghanaian music industry has record labels.
When asked if he would accept to sign to a Ghanaian record label if the terms are favourable, he replied: “are there record labels in Ghana?"
“No, no, no. I am sorry there is no record label in Ghana,” he said.
Just like Kwabena Kwabena, some people believe that a lot of the music companies that are described as record labels are just music management and promotional enterprises. He believes most of these entities only provide label services but are not record labels in the sense of the word.
Others have argued that the size of a record has nothing to do with its functions because businesses across the world are not of the same sizes and magnitudes but usually do virtually the same thing.
Some music companies described as record labels are RuffTown Records, Highly Spiritual Music, Lynx Entertainment, Black Avenue Musik, Mimlife Records, SarkCess Music, MicBurnerz Music, Flip the Music, among others.
