US-born forward of Ghanaian descent, Patrick Agyemang, says his decision to represent the Yanks ahead of the Black Stars was because there was no contact between his entourage and the Ghana Football Association (GFA).
The 24-year-old made his debut for USA last month in an international friendly against Venezuela, scoring in the 3-1 win.
Having been a regular for Major League Soccer side, Charlotte FC, Agyemang was eligible to play for Ghana through his parents.
However, it was the USMNT who acted swiftly as they secured the services of the forward.
Agyemang explains his reason for wearing US colours rather than representing Ghana.
“I grew up in a Ghana household and watched Black Stars games all the time," he told Flashscore in an interview. "I love the passion Asamoah Gyan always showed and growing up you’d love to be a part of that.
"I tried not to think about it too much, but when the USMNT call came, my family was the happiest thing ever.
“My family urged me to play wherever I feel comfortable and obviously I was born in the USA and live there. I was never around the Ghana national team or anything like that. So I never really was in contact with them."
Last season, Agyemang scored 10 goals and registered three assists in 34 league games as Charlotte finished fifth in the Eastern Conference.
