The Ghana Education Service (GES) has made a sharp U-turn, directing the management of Sawla Senior High School in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District of the Savannah Region to recall over 30 students who were placed on indefinite suspension last Wednesday.
The Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District Director of GES, Anthony Kwasi Yeboah, speaking to JoyNews’ Isaac Nongya, stated that the school lacked the authority to impose such a punishment on the affected students. As a result, the headmaster has been ordered to recall all students immediately.
"Yes, they [students] had left the school before the headmaster, and his assistant came to me [district Education office] and told me about the suspension. So, I told him to recall the students because he has no authority to suspend them," said Mr Yeboah.
Mr. Yeboah further stated that he would visit the school on Wednesday to engage with management and ensure that all students return to continue their academic work.
The students were suspended following an investigation by a seven-member committee, which looked into allegations of immoral behavior and possession of mobile phones on campus.
The majority of the affected students are girls in their second year. However, their indefinite suspension was imposed without consulting the district or regional GES directorates and without prior notice to their parents.
The directive for their recall comes after Myjoyonline broke the news of their suspension, prompting further scrutiny of the school's decision-making process.
GES has assured the public that it will closely monitor the situation.
