The Minority in Parliament has criticised President John Mahama for describing Ghana’s economy as “criminally mismanaged,” calling the remark unpresidential and unwarranted.

According to the Minority, such language not only undermines investor confidence but also disrespects the efforts made to stabilise and grow the economy before Mahama’s return to office.

Delivering the Minority’s address, Stephen Amoah, the Nhyiaeso MP, argued that despite economic challenges, Ghana had witnessed significant improvements in key indicators before January 2025.

“The Ghanaian economy saw a recovery, recording real GDP growth above 6% in 2024, compared with the revised target of 4%. It is, therefore, misleading for President Mahama to paint a picture of total economic collapse,” he stated.

Mr Amoah further noted that the previous administration successfully managed inflationary pressures while ensuring key social and economic commitments were met.

“How can an economy described as ‘criminally mismanaged’ deliver a 25% wage adjustment for workers while maintaining macroeconomic stability?” he questioned, adding that President Mahama’s statement appeared more political than factual.

The Minority urged the President to adopt a more responsible and statesmanlike approach in addressing economic issues.

“At a time when Ghanaians expect solutions, the President should focus on clear policy directions rather than resorting to divisive rhetoric. Such remarks are unpresidential and do not inspire confidence in our economic management,” Mr Amoah emphasised.
