The government will introduce a 20 per cent allowance for teachers serving in rural areas to encourage them to accept and remain at their posts in under-served communities.
President John Dramani Mahama made the announcement during his State of the Nation Address (#SONA2025) in Parliament on Thursday, February 27, 2025.
“To motivate teachers and improve education in rural areas, the government will implement a 20 per cent allowance for teachers who accept postings to deprived communities,” he said.
Mr Mahama added that district assemblies would be responsible for monitoring the scheme to ensure teachers remain at their designated posts.
He also announced plans to construct teacher accommodation units in rural areas under the Teacher Dabre Initiative.
“No new school will be built without teachers’ accommodation,” he said, adding that teacher welfare remains central to improving education across the country.
