The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has filed an appeal against a court ruling that awarded Ghanaian music producer Kobby Spiky Nkrumah $250,000 in damages for copyright infringement.
The original judgment, delivered by the Commercial Court in Accra on July 17, 2024, found CAF guilty of using Nkrumah's music track, "Okomfo Anokye," in promotional materials for the 2018 CAF Awards without obtaining his consent.
In response to the appeal, Nkrumah has initiated a crowdfunding campaign to cover legal expenses associated with defending his intellectual property rights.
He expressed concerns about the financial burden of prolonged legal proceedings, stating that CAF's appeal aims to "drag this fight out, using their deep pockets and legal muscle to exhaust me into giving up."
The case has sparked significant public attention, with the hashtag #CAFMustPaySpiky trending on social media platforms.
Supporters have criticized CAF for not honouring the court's decision, accusing the organisation of exploiting African creatives while prioritising profits.
The outcome of CAF's appeal remains pending, as both parties prepare for the next phase of legal proceedings.
