The Ministry of Transport has appointed a 13-member inter-agency committee to review aspects of the Road Traffic Regulations 2012 (L.I. 2180) that prohibit the use of motorcycles, commonly known as “okada,” for commercial purposes.
According to Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe, the committee has been given three weeks to complete its work.
Speaking at the inauguration of the committee on Tuesday, March 18, Mr Nikpe emphasised that the move aligns with the Mahama government’s efforts to legalize the commercial use of motorcycles.
“We want them to use motorcycles and tricycles for commercial purposes, and exactly that is what we’re doing. We are looking within a period of three weeks for them to do all the stakeholder consultations,” he stated.
He added that the committee’s recommendations will facilitate amendments to L.I. 2180, paving the way for young people seeking livelihoods through commercial motorcycle and tricycle transport.
