Ghana defender Jerome Opoku says being named in the starting lineup for the game against Madagascar came as a surprise to him.
The centre-back was given a starting berth in the Black Stars' 2026 FIFA World Qualifier in Morocco against Madagascar, having made a cameo appearance against Chad at the Accra Sports Stadium days before.
Opoku contributed to the team keeping a clean sheet in the 3-0 win as they moved three points at the top of the table.
Speaking on being handed a start in the game, the Turkish-based defender told FlashScore, “I would say I was a little surprised to start against Madagascar, but as I said, I had always worked and looked forward to having my time here, and I hope I did what was expected of me and didn’t disappoint Ghanaians and the team.
"I’m super happy to finally make my official debut and full competitive debut for my country. It’s an honor."
Opoku is currently with Istanbul Basaksehir for the final round of the season.
