Deputy Director in charge of Operations at the Presidency, Mustapha Gbande, has called for the immediate arrest of three key figures he holds responsible for the disappearance of over 1,300 containers belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) at Tema Port.
The missing containers, which contained vital electrical equipment meant for national power distribution, have sparked widespread concern.
Speaking on Citi FM on March 31, Mr Gbande specifically demanded the arrest of Alexander Afenyo-Markin, former Board Chairman of ECG; Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, former Minister of Energy; and Samuel Dubik Mahama, former Chief Executive Officer of ECG.
He argued that these individuals must be held accountable for their roles in the alleged scandal, which has raised serious questions about procurement irregularities and mismanagement within the power sector.
The controversy first emerged following an investigative report which highlighted suspicious transactions and irregularities in ECG’s procurement processes.
It has been alleged that certain government officials and executives at ECG were aware of the improper handling of the containers but failed to take appropriate action.
The disappearance of such crucial equipment, according to Mr Gbande, is unacceptable and requires urgent intervention.
Expressing his frustration, Mr Gbande insisted that those implicated must not be allowed to evade responsibility.
“The Board Chairman, Afenyo-Markin, now wants to run away from responsibility, and it is in the interest of the country for him to be arrested immediately,” he asserted.
He further stated, “I am calling for the immediate arrest of Afenyo-Markin, Samuel Dubik Mahama, and Matthew Opoku Prempeh because we cannot continue to have these instances of corruption, and it is time for us to take action.”
