Gomoa Central Member of Parliament (MP), Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A Plus, has accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of sabotaging efforts to curb illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.
According to him, some NPP members have intensified galamsey activities following President John Mahama’s assumption of office, allegedly to tarnish his image.
“Immediately after Mahama’s victory, the NPP decided to return to galamsey sites to disgrace Mahama. The NPP members who were involved in galamsey and failed to stop despite several calls have intensified their operations,” he claimed in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem.
“All the galamsey operators are NPP members who are trying to create the impression that Mahama needs more gold for the Goldbod policy. But they [NPP] have returned to the galamsey sites with the missing excavators that were never found,” he alleged.
A Plus’ claims come days after NPP Director of Communications, Richard Ahiagbah, accused the NDC of failing to take decisive action to address the menace.
Speaking at a press conference, Ahiagbah alleged that some NDC members feel emboldened to engage in galamsey, believing the Mahama administration would be lenient on the issue.
