The Member of Parliament for Binduri in the Upper East region, Issifu Mahmoud, is urging the government to urgently reassess its security strategy and deploy additional military personnel to the volatile areas of Bawku and Binduri in the Upper East Region.
This call follows the tragic killing of two police officers in the area. According to a statement from the Director of Public Affairs at the Ghana Police Service, ACP Grace Ansah-Akrofi, the officers were gunned down in Poyamirea, a community on the outskirts of Binduri, on Sunday, April 13.

Speaking on JoyNews’ News Desk on Monday, April 14, Mr Mahmoud noted that the police force alone is unable to manage the increasing violence in the region.
He stated that the police are overstretched and in desperate need of support from the military.
“We need more security presence here. The military should take control of certain parts of Binduri,” Mr Mahmoud said.
He also recalled a recent incident where the police shot and killed a youth leader, which led to a violent rampage by local youth. The rampage destroyed numerous police checkpoints, leaving security in various neighbourhoods and roads severely compromised.
He further pointed out that, apart from the main police stations in Bawku and Binduri, which are currently under the protection of military personnel, most police visibility points have been vandalised, significantly undermining the effectiveness of local policing.
“Given that the police services are, for all intents and purposes, suspended or withdrawn from many areas, it’s crucial that the military steps in to cover the security gaps. The areas where police once operated need to be reinforced by military personnel, but that has not yet been done,” he stressed.
