Political scientist Dr Richard Amoako Baah has strongly condemned the politicisation of education, particularly the Free Senior High School (SHS) programme, emphasising that education should never be used as a political tool.
Speaking on Joy News' The Pulse show, Dr Amoako Baah criticised the NPP government for its lack of transparency regarding the challenges faced by the Free SHS initiative.
He argued that the government should have been more open with the public.
"They should have come out and said, 'We meant well, but the financial situation has become unpredictable, and therefore, we would have to ask parents for help.' What is wrong with that?" he questioned, calling for more honesty and openness from the government.
Dr Baah also expressed frustration with those who continue to promote a misleading narrative about the programme’s success.
"When a crazy person says there’s something wrong with that, you want to boast that you said you were going to do something, that you meant it, and that you did it even though you know you didn’t. What kind of nonsense is that?" he said, visibly upset by the situation.
He further warned that spreading misinformation about the programme's success only harms the education system.
"It makes no sense. You are hurting yourself by attempting to mislead the public. The children are not doing well, why insist that they are?" he questioned, stressing the importance of realistically assessing the programme’s challenges.
He concluded his remarks with a clear statement: "Everything is politics, but education should not be."
