The Minister of Health, Mintah Akando, has announced that the ministry is set to donate essential medical equipment to the Tamale Teaching Hospital, following Monday’s confrontation with the staff of the facility over the unavailability of some medical equipment, which led to the death of a patient.
He disclosed this during a press briefing on Thursday, 24th April, ahead of the donation, which will take place at the hospital’s premises.
"I have some equipment, some consumables, and some medicines to be donated to the Tamale Teaching Hospital. We have an EEG as part of the donation, an Enableliser set, we have a fatal heart dictator, we have an ECG machine, we have an ICU ventilator...." he said, adding that "There are about 35 items that we are going to donate today."
The Minister added that, "The health sector of this country has experienced decline for the past eight years, and for that matter, I acknowledge that the health professionals have worked under challenging circumstances."
Mr Mintah emphasised that the government is committed to "correcting the wrong" in the health sector.
He has, however, appealed to the health workers at the facility who have embarked on a strike to rescind their decision and have an engagement with him.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Medical Association is demanding an apology from him and a reversal of the decision to dismiss the CEO of the Tamale Teaching Hospital.
