Staff attrition has hit the Goaso Municipal Hospital in the Ahafo Region, with 59 specialists and senior nurses leaving the facility for greener pastures abroad, Dr James Ankomah, the hospital's Medical Superintendent, has said.
In an interview at Goaso, Dr Ankomah described the situation as worrying and attributed it partly to the poor condition of workers' services.
He said the problems of lack of motivation and poor remuneration as well as high cost of residential accommodation, ought to be tackled urgently to sustain the interest of the health personnel working in the area.
“Many of the hospital staff and health workers spent a chunk of their meagre salaries on rent and thereby put pressure on them”, Dr Ankomah stated and called on the government to construct residential accommodation and improve the conditions of service of the health workers too.
In a related interview, Dr Akosua Owusu-Sarpong, the Ahafo Regional Director of Health Services, said the government could resort to a Public Private Partnership agreement to provide residential accommodation for the health workers.
She also appealed for modern medical devices and equipment, especially ventilation machines for the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital, saying the region also required regional medical stores.
