The Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has cautioned President John Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) against interfering with the judiciary.
He warned that any attempt to remove the Chief Justice could destabilise the foundation of Ghana’s democracy.
Speaking on JoyNews' The Pulse on Monday, May 5, Mr Ahiagbah said: “Nothing will break in this country if the Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkonoo, remains.
"If the President cannot strengthen the judiciary, he should leave it alone."
Mr Ahiagbah accused the NDC of exploiting weaknesses in the legal framework to carry out a politically motivated campaign against the Chief Justice. According to him, the move is not based on any breach of the law but is a calculated political agenda disguised as a legal process.
“This whole agenda has been cooked,” he said. “The law is only being used to give effect to their politics. It’s not about legality — it’s about politics. And that’s what makes it dangerous.”
He emphasised that Ghana’s democratic structure is built on three equal arms of government — the executive, legislature, and judiciary — each designed to act as a check on the others. Undermining one, especially the judiciary, threatens the entire system.
“If you touch the judiciary, you unravel the democracy. The judiciary is the guardian of the rule of law,” he asserted. “Any attempt to politically influence or remove the Chief Justice should be treated as taboo. It’s a line that must not be crossed.”
