Ghana’s energy sector is undergoing a major transformation, with thermal power rapidly overtaking hydroelectricity as the dominant source of electricity. However, this shift comes at a significant financial and structural cost.
Independent Power Producers (IPPs), who supply the bulk of thermal energy and fuel suppliers, are reportedly owed over $2.5 billion by the government — a debt burden that threatens the sustainability of the country’s power supply.
