A yet-to-be-identified driver has been shot and killed on the Ntotroso-Sunyani Highway in the Bono Region.
The incident occurred last Friday while the driver was transporting passengers from Sunyani to Bibiani in a Ford vehicle.
Assembly Member for the Atronie Electoral Area, Richard Adu, revealed that the driver was shot in the head.
Residents, gripped by fear, told Adom News that the Ntotroso-Sunyani road, which links the Ahafo and Bono regions, has become a haven for highway robbers due to its deplorable condition.
The driver’s body has been deposited at the Sunyani Teaching Hospital morgue, while two passengers who sustained gunshot wounds are receiving treatment at the same facility.
The incident has reignited long-standing fears among residents and commuters, prompting renewed calls for government intervention.
They urged authorities to rehabilitate the deteriorated road, originally constructed under former President John Agyekum Kufuor. According to them, the road has now become a hotspot for armed robbers who frequently attack motorists with impunity.
In interviews, some passengers expressed fear about using the route due to the high rate of robberies.
A female farmer from the Atronie farming community expressed deep concern, stating that she and her colleagues can no longer access their farms due to rampant robberies and sporadic gunfire.
According to residents, the situation has worsened, and they believe security agencies are aware that these robberies are becoming a recurring issue, largely due to the poor state of the road.
