Panama has declared its full support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative, describing it as “the most serious, credible and realistic basis for resolving the regional dispute” over the Moroccan Sahara.
This position was formalised in a Joint Communiqué signed on Monday in Rabat following talks between Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, and Panama’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Javier Martínez-Acha Vásquez, who is on a working visit to the Kingdom.
At a press briefing after the meeting, the Panamanian minister went further, stating that the 2007 autonomy initiative “should be the only solution for the future,” and reaffirmed his country’s clear and unwavering support for the plan as a path to a lasting resolution.
Panama’s endorsement of the Moroccan autonomy proposal follows its November 2024 decision to cut ties with the self-proclaimed “sadr.”
The Joint Communiqué also reaffirmed the shared commitment of both nations to upholding the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity.
