Spokesperson for Kennedy Agyapong’s campaign, Kwasi Kwarteng, says the team is unbothered by claims from the camp of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia that over 200 Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) have endorsed his bid to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) into the 2028 elections.

Speaking on JoyNews’ The Pulse on Monday, June 23, Mr Kwarteng said such endorsements are not new and do not necessarily translate into victory.

“It is good for them (the Bawumia camp), we wish them well if indeed they believe they have over 200 MMDCEs. I’m sure the election day will vindicate that position.”

He criticised what he described as a deliberate tactic to stage endorsements and create a false sense of widespread support.

“It was a similar practice done during the last elections that directly convinced polling station executives to vote for Dr Bawumia, and we all saw the outcome.”

Mr Kwarteng further stated that the former Assin Central MP’s camp approach is focused on the grassroots.

“This will be the last time that, as a team, we will be paying so much attention or responding to this rehearsed, choreographed, staged, and sponsored endorsement by a few people, which presumption is created as though it represents the entire team. It was the same strategy and tactics that were adopted during the last elections, where claims were made that about 137 MPs were supporting one candidate, all government appointees were supporting one candidate, even including party executives at all structures, which led us to the worst and most humiliating defeat."

He continued, "Our focus is to engage over 200,000 polling station executives. We are confident that they will make a determination on who they believe should lead the party — a candidate who is marketable, winnable, and can unite the party.”

He continued saying, "But I know that this time around, they will not make a decision and elect a candidate that is not marketable, elect a candidate that is not winnable, elect a candidate that will not be able to unite the party. I know that this time around, they will not make that decision. So it is left for them [Bawumia camp] for them to lie to themselves that they have been endorsed by these MMDCEs."

His comment comes after more than 200 former MMDCEs met former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia on Monday as the race to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) into the 2028 general election heats up.

The meeting, which took place at the Alisa Hotel in Accra, came just days after Dr Bawumia hosted over 60 NPP Members of Parliament at his campaign office, where they publicly declared their support for his bid to become the party’s flagbearer.

The former MMDCEs, who served under previous NPP administrations, discussed strategies and possibly declared their support for Dr Bawumia ahead of the crucial internal presidential primary in January 2026.
