Gospel musician Carl Clottey has mentioned how the disqualification of one of his most popular songs, One and Only, in the Ghana Music Awards, affected him.
Speaking on Hitz Praise Zone with Nii Noi, Clottey explained that the song did not make it to an award nomination due to release timing.
“We released One and Only at the tail end of 2018. When the song got nominated, it was later taken out because the release year didn’t align with the award calendar. The song actually gained momentum in 2019, but by the time the 2020 award season came around, it was no longer eligible,” he said on Hitz FM.
He described the experience as disheartening, particularly because of how well the song was received by the public.
“The real challenge was the lack of proper mechanisms to promote and push the release effectively,” he added.
“It really got to me. At some point, I honestly felt like I was done with music awards entirely,” he said.
Carl also spoke about his ongoing frustration with the lack of recognition for his work in subsequent years.
“Every year, we submit our work for nominations, but nothing comes through. Meanwhile, songs that didn’t make as much impact somehow get selected. It makes you question the criteria.”
Despite the repeated setbacks, the Your Grace singer says he remains focused on his calling. “I’ve come to understand that my focus should remain on ministry and impact. The applause of men fades, but God’s approval lasts forever.”
Carl Clottey, known for gospel hits such as Deedew, Yehowa, and One and Only, continues to grow his influence in Ghana’s gospel music space through both performance and songwriting. His music is noted for its lyrical depth, spiritual message, and emotive delivery.
