The Republic of North Macedonia has declared its support for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan, describing it as the only basis for resolving the dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.
This position was outlined in a joint statement signed by Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, and North Macedonia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Timčo Mucunski, following their meeting on Monday in Skopje.
According to the statement, Minister Mucunski reaffirmed his country’s longstanding support for the UN-led process aimed at achieving a just, lasting, and mutually acceptable political solution.
Both countries reiterated their commitment to the UN’s leadership in the political process and expressed support for UN Security Council Resolution 2756 (October 2024), which emphasises the parties’ responsibility in pursuing a realistic and lasting solution based on compromise.
The statement also reaffirmed the two nations’ support for the efforts of the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy and his mission to advance the political process in accordance with relevant Security Council resolutions and the principles of the UN Charter.
North Macedonia’s endorsement adds to the growing international support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative, a momentum bolstered by the leadership of King Mohammed VI and an emerging global consensus around the plan.
