Minister for Defence, Dr Edward Omane Boamah, has reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to deepening military cooperation with China, as both countries marked the 98th anniversary of the founding of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA).
Speaking at an event hosted by the Chinese Ambassador in Accra on Thursday, July 31, Dr Boamah praised the enduring partnership between the two nations and highlighted its strategic importance to Ghana’s security and development.
The Defence Minister acknowledged the role Chinese support has played in enhancing Ghana’s military capabilities and infrastructure.
“We’re proud of the military cooperation, infrastructure development, and mutual support between our nations,” Dr Boamah stated.
“China’s assistance has enhanced our military capabilities, and we appreciate their commitment to our collective security.”
Dr Boamah’s remarks came against the backdrop of ongoing efforts to restore calm in conflict-prone areas such as Bawku, where the Ghana Armed Forces have been deployed.
He confirmed that the military was also investigating reports of misconduct by some personnel, in line with directives from President John Dramani Mahama.

“While seeing to military deployment to restore peace and stability to Bawku and other areas affected by the chieftaincy conflict... I also ensured that concerns of inappropriate conduct are being thoroughly addressed,” he said.
Looking ahead, the Minister called for continued collaboration between Ghana and China in the areas of peacebuilding and global security.

“As we look to the future, let’s continue to nurture and strengthen our partnership. Together, we can build a safer, more secure, and prosperous future for our nations and the world,” he remarked.
Dr Boamah concluded his address with a toast to the “enduring friendship between Ghana and China” and expressed hope that their relationship would “continue to grow from strength to strength.”
