Kofi Tonto, an aide to former Vice-President and 2024 NPP flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has assured that their campaign will be driven by policies and solutions rather than divisive rhetoric.
Appearing on Channel One TV on Monday, August 25, Mr Tonto stressed that the Bawumia campaign would reject appeals to tribal or religious sentiment, describing such tactics as “irresponsible” and “insensitive.”
“We will focus on the message. We will not denigrate any group of people in Ghana,” he said. “Ghana is gradually becoming a nation of one people, even in terms of tribes. A single Ghanaian may trace their lineage to three or four different groups. That is the oneness that is emerging, and that is what we must build on.”
“Let us eschew tribal and religious bigotry. It is irresponsible, it is insensitive, and it is not the right path for a political party to take,” he added.
His remarks come amid ongoing debate sparked by a widely circulated video of fellow NPP flagbearer hopeful Dr Bryan Acheampong.
The footage appeared to suggest that Dr Acheampong blamed Dr Bawumia for the protracted Mamprusi–Kusasi conflict in northern Ghana.
The Acheampong campaign, however, has rejected the claim, insisting in a statement over the weekend that the video was “mischievously pieced together and venomously captioned.”
It maintained that Dr Acheampong’s words had been taken out of context in an attempt to stoke tribal tension.
