Former Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has pledged to transform every regional capital into a duty-free zone if elected president in the 2026 general elections.
Speaking during his campaign tour of the Ashanti Region on Thursday, September 10, Dr. Bawumia said the policy would significantly expand businesses and spur job creation across the country.
“By God’s grace, I want to help many businesses in Ghana. Currently, in Accra, there's only one duty-free zone in Tema, but I am going to change that.
"Every regional capital will become a duty-free zone. So Kumasi will have a duty-free zone, Takoradi will have one, and so will every other regional capital,” he said.
According to Dr Bawumia, the move will give businesses more room to thrive while creating sustainable jobs.
“This will help businesses in these duty-free zones to expand, and it will create jobs. When it comes to job creation, I have many ideas to implement. Give me the opportunity, and we will bring jobs to you.
"I have already shown and demonstrated what I can do—and I will do even more,” he added.
